ASTM A216 Standard Specification for Carbon Steel Castings made in China Foundry

ASTM A216 covers three grades of carbon steel (Grades WCA, WCB, and WCC), the followings are their mechanical properties, chemical composition and other properties.

The selection of which grades shall depend on the design and service conditions, mechanical properties, and the high temperature characteristics.

This standard is for carbon steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings, or other pressure-containing parts for high-temperature service and of quality suitable for assembly with other castings or wrought-steel parts by fusion welding.

Steel castings shall be heat treated and furnished, as appropriate to their design and chemical composition, in the annealed, or normalized, or normalized and tempered conditions after they have been allowed to cool below the transformation range.

The surface of steel castings shall be free of adhering elements such as sand, cracks, hot tears, and other discontinuities, and as such be repair welded when judged appropriate.

Phosphorus (P): 0 to 0.04 %

ASTM A216 Grade WCB Cast Steel

Elongation at Break: 25 %
Specific Heat Capacity: 450 J/kg-K
Strength to Weight Ratio: 73 kN-m/kg
Tensile Strength: Ultimate (UTS): 570 MPa (83 x 103 psi)
Tensile Strength: Yield (Proof): 280 MPa (41 x 103 psi)
Thermal Expansion: 11.9 µm/m-K

Alloy Composition
Iron (Fe): 97.0 to 100 %
Manganese (Mn): 0 to 1.0 %
Residuals: 0 to 1.0 %
Silicon (Si): 0 to 0.6 %
Carbon (C): 0 to 0.3 %
Sulfur (S): 0 to 0.045 %

Tensile Strength: Yield (Proof): 300 MPa (44 x 103 psi)
Thermal Expansion: 11.9 µm/m-K
